gone to bed about 2am and is almost five hours into his night's sleep when woken. He lies in bed for a few moments, wondering why people are talking so loudly and at such an early hour. Then, someone knocks on his door and says: “Open the door or we will break it open.”

So, he gets out of bed and opens the door. Outside, as he stands blinking sleep out of his eyes, there are three or four police officers wearing black body armour and carrying assault rifles. He follows them out of the house to take a seat on the grass in the courtyard. Batato, likewise, is herded to stand with the group.

6.55AM
The “gangsta criminal” has disappeared and the police are at a loss. They search and hunt, covering the master bedroom area. Into the bathroom, smashing in a door (the handle would have worked if they tried it) to a small storage area where toilet rolls and cleaning equipment are stored. There is, they believe, a hidden room somewhere but they have no idea where. Out in the hallway, between the large shower and massage area and the main bedroom, police officers find an unusual looking wall area. A sledgehammer is sent for and they smash their way through the façade and into the dumbwaiter beyond. One officer reports: “Um. Nothing in it.” Another says: “You hold the team there — I'm just going to talk to the head of security to see if we can get any ideas.”

6.57AM
It's an easy 10 minutes since the raid began and the elite anti-terrorist unit has no idea where its target is or how to find him. It's not easy to lose a 170kg German but, somehow, they have managed. The briefing details around the suspected Doomsday device have seen the time limit long expire. “Hold on the lift damage, hold,” one officer tells another.

Outside, a dazzled Ortmann is watching the scene unfold. There's a helicopter circling the area, buzzing the mansion repeatedly as officers armed with assault rifles run back and forth along the walkway at the ridge of the roof. He watches Tempero raised to his feet and led into the mansion. It is surreal.

6.59AM
Tempero arrives and walks up to the cupboard disguising the entrance to the panic room. He tells the officers to push the back wall. There's a staircase behind it which takes you up a staircase to the safe room. “It's up there,” he says, before being led outside again.
